The Life of Mrs. Fifty Shades

Chapter Twelve

Christian spun me around then pulled me back into his chest. With perfect posture and technique, he guided me across the dance floor. For someone so reserved and withdrawn, he was a very good dancer.

“I liked your speech.”

“Because it was short?” He bunched my dress together in his fingertips.

I chuckled. “Because it was good.”

He held my hand as he swayed me from left to right. “I think my speeches have gotten a lot better since you came into my life.”

“Really?” I asked. “I don’t remember helping you write them.”

“No. But you inspire them.” He pulled me closer to him and eyed my lips like he wanted to kiss me. If so many eyes weren’t on us, he probably would have.

The music ended and the charity event came to a close. It was a three-hour event with food and wine, and I was tired of smiling like a Stepford wife. People kept asking me what it was like to be married to the infamous Christian Grey. Instead of telling them off like I wanted to, I had to give a rehearsed and political answer. I was eager to go home and spend the evening with my husband while our children went to sleep.

“Ready to go home?” he asked.

“Definitely.”

The corner of his mouth rose in a smile. “Then let’s round up the kids and say our goodbyes.”

Getting out of there was a nightmare. Everyone wanted to stop and talk to Christian. And even more people wanted pictures with him. He was always gracious and gave everyone exactly what they wanted. He hid his unease so well I actually believed he was having a good time.

We finally made it to the entrance when we were stopped once again. A man in a suit walked up to Christian and asked him to follow him into the back. The director of the charity wanted a few final words.

My heels were killing me, and Phoebe started to feel heavy in my arms. Teddy stayed by my side just as I asked, so at least he was behaving himself. But I didn’t want to stand there for however long until Christian returned.

Christian could tell I was uncomfortable. “Wait in the car. Taylor is parked out front.”

I was grateful we didn’t have to stand there for another twenty minutes. “Alright. Don’t take too long.”

“I won’t.” He gave me a kiss on the cheek before he walked away.

“Let’s go home, guys. I’m exhausted.”

“I’m not tired,” Teddy said. “Just bored.”

We walked out the front doors and down the steps that led to the street. Taylor’s black car was parked at the curb where it dropped us off. I opened the back door and got inside with Phoebe and Teddy. After Phoebe was buckled into her seat, the car pulled away from the curb.

“Taylor, wait. Christian will be right out.” How could he forget Christian? Everyone had an off night, and perhaps Taylor was having his first.

Silent, he kept driving.

Teddy looked out the window and didn’t realize anything was off. Phoebe was asleep.

But I knew something wasn’t right. “Taylor?”

He stopped the car in the middle of the road and turned around. A man I’d never seen before stared back at me with ruthless eyes. And the barrel of a gun was pointed right at my face. It was pressed against the seat and difficult to see unless you were looking right at it. “Do as I say.”

I stiffened in my seat and felt my heart pound. Fear gripped me by the throat, and I could barely breathe. Teddy was directly in his line of sight so I maneuvered my body in front of him just in case this psychopath decided to shoot.

“Hand over your phone.”

I fished around in my purse and tossed it into the front seat.

“I don’t want to hurt you. But if you give me a reason to, I will. Now sit back and be quiet.” He laid the gun on his thigh and faced forward. He hit the gas and the car started to move again.

I wanted to scream.

Christian had no idea we were in danger. It would be at least ten minutes before he figured out what happened. Unless the man who lured him away was part of the plan. What if they were taking him somewhere else to be snatched? What if our lives were going to end that very night?

I didn’t have time to panic or sob. I couldn’t save Christian because I didn’t know where he was. But I had our two children that I needed to protect even if it cost my own life.

And that’s when I remembered the pen.

Thank god.

I fished it out of my purse slowly so he wouldn’t notice my movements. Thankfully, it was black and difficult to see. My thumb found the groove along the side, and I hit the button just as Christian instructed me. I hit it again just to make sure.

And then I hit it again.

Sitting inside that car felt like a lifetime inside of a few minutes. We passed through the city and the traffic and headed toward the coast. The shipping docks were coming into view, and I was growing more uneasy. No one had come for me, so I had no idea if the pen was working. Was I hitting the button hard enough?

I wanted to ask questions. I wanted to jab the pen into the man’s neck and kill him then and there. But he would lose control of the car and we might veer into oncoming traffic. I couldn’t risk the safety of Teddy and Phoebe. All I could do was hope someone was coming for me or figure out a way to stop him once the car was in park.

The man pulled onto a side street and headed toward an abandoned warehouse. It looked twenty years old and run down. It was creepy and strange, matching the situation perfectly.

“Mommy, where are we?”

I kept a brave face on for Teddy. If I didn’t, he would panic. And if he panicked, that could get us killed. “We’re stopping for just a second, and then we’ll be on our way home.”

Thankfully, Phoebe was sound asleep the entire time.

The man put the car in park. “Get out.”

My hands were shaking so much I couldn’t move.

He stepped out of the car first and shut the door. Then he came to Phoebe’s side and opened the door.

“Touch either of my kids, and I’ll rip your face off.” I had no right to make threats in that moment, but the second I saw him come near her, I snapped. “Give me a second, and I'll get them out of the car. Back off.”

He continued to stand there, his eyes containing nothing but pure evil. Then he reached out his hand to unbuckled her safety belt.

I grabbed his arm and bent his wrist the way Christian had taught me. He could throw me around, but he sure as hell couldn’t touch my kids. I sunk my teeth into his arm and bit him as hard as I could.

“Ahh!” He stumbled back and gripped his arm. “You bitch!"

I unbuckled Phoebe’s safety belt and yanked her out of the car seat. Once she was jerked, she started wailing.

“Mommy, what’s going on?” Teddy cowered against the door.

“Teddy, get out of the car,” I commanded. I shielded Phoebe with my body just in case shots were fired.

The man pulled out his gun and aimed right at us. “What did I tell you?”

Shots were fired, and I covered both Teddy and Phoebe with my body, needing to protect them as my last dying act. I would never be able to tell Christian I loved him again, but I would make sure my kids lived on. They would experience life to the fullest, grow old and have kids of their own.

No one would take that away from them.

But I didn’t feel the burn of the bullets. I didn’t feel any blood ooze out of my body. All I felt was my frantically beating heart going strong.

When I finally found my courage, I turned around and saw my kidnapper lying dead on the concrete. The gun was a foot away, and blood pooled underneath his body. I was glad it was dark so I couldn’t see all the details.

The door next to Teddy opened, and a man wearing all black grabbed Teddy. “She’s alright. She has two kids with her.” He picked up Teddy and held him against his shoulder. “Mrs. Grey, are you alright?”

Oh thank god. They worked for Christian. “We’re okay.”

They helped me and Phoebe out of the car and made sure none of us were hurt. The man kept holding Teddy as I cradled Phoebe in my arms. I cried as I held her, so grateful nothing happened to either one of them.

“We have to keep moving.” He seemed to be the leader because he was giving all the orders. “Come with me.”

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“We need to get you to safety.” He opened the back door to the SUV. “Come on, we need to keep moving.”

I followed orders because I didn’t know what else to do. They just saved my life and knew exactly who I was. If I couldn’t trust them, I didn’t know who I could trust.

They took us to an abandoned meadow in the forest. An airstrip was there along with a medium sized plane.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“We’re getting you out of here.”

“And taking me where?” I demanded. “What about Christian? Do you have men looking for him? The last place he was seen was at that charity gala in Seattle. Some man took him to the back but I think he was there to hurt him. Did you send men to get him?”

“I don’t know what’s happening with him,” he answered. “Our orders are to get you out of here.”

“And take us where?”

“I can’t tell you. But you’ll be safe.”

I was torn directly in half. I wanted to protect Teddy and Phoebe, but I didn’t want to leave Christian behind. He probably had a plan to get himself out of the situation, but what if I was wrong? “Did you call the police?”

“Yes. It’s been done.”

I couldn’t leave Phoebe and Teddy with these men. They seemed trustworthy but it was a chance I couldn’t risk.

They parked the SUV near the plane then escorted me out of the car.

“I don’t know if I can do this,” I admitted.

“You have to.” He held Teddy’s hand and escorted him onto the plane. The engine was already running. “These are the orders we’ve been given. We need to keep you safe. Now go, Mrs. Grey.”

“But what about Christian?” I could barely talk over the engines.

“Ma’am, you’re our priority. Let us get you to safety, and then we’ll worry about him.”

Goddammit, Christian. We should both be the priority, not just me.

He waited for me to walk inside so he could shut the door. “You’re wasting time. The quicker you’re off the ground, the safer he’ll be. Now go.”

There was nothing else I could do, and while I wanted to save Christian, the kids were my priority. I had to make sure they were safe before I did anything rash. “Okay.” I walked onto the plane and listened to the door shut behind me. I got Phoebe and Teddy into their seats and strapped them in tight. The plane taxied to the runway and the engines roared to life. The pandemonium matched the feelings in my heart. “Christian, please be safe.”
